Dance Day Report
Around 70 people attended Dance Day on Friday 25th January. Some just did one or two taster sessions, whilst others stayed for the entire day.
The aims of the day were:
- To raise awareness of the community dance programme and recruit new people for the festival
- Publicity for CAHT
- Provide an enjoyable event for the local community
- Use the opportunity to assess our new dance instructors
1. Although some of the participants on the day were existing users, there were a lot of people that either had not tried dance before, or were not aware of the vast variety of dance and accessibility of the CAHT dance programme. All participants were handed community exercise and dance timetables when they were leaving and many said that they would attend classes in the future.
2. Due to four of the local newspapers publishing articles about Dance Day, the awareness of Camden Active Health Team was simultaneously increased. The beginners tap class on Monday had four new attendees, none of which had been to Dance Day, but had read the article and found out about the classes.
3. The atmosphere on the day was extremely fun and sociable and many people requested repeat events in the future. There were also suggestions of a regular dance party so that people could get together and socialise whilst learning dance styles at the same time. Some comments from evaluation forms:
“Brilliant morning” – Carole
“I look forward to coming to more dance days.” – Mary
“Great idea.”
“First time salsa for me. Want one from Active Health Team. Excellent, Thanks.”
4. We recruited some sessional dance instructors in 2007. Dance Day also provided us with the opportunity to assess the actual teaching of some of these instructors. Rosaria and I completed teacher assessment forms and participants were also asked to rate each instructor as well as the actual dance style. Below are the results. We will be meeting in the near future to discuss the teaching we witnessed.

Conclusion
Dance Day achieved the aims it set out and therefore can be described as a success. Not only was it an enjoyable event for the community and an opportunity to gain some publicity to boost class numbers, but also a chance to evaluate our instructors from both professional and public perspectives. The next stage is to use the information gained appropriately and develop a strategic approach to the dance programme according to public feedback.
